Before you can work on earning a degree in any subject in France, you first need to apply for admissions at the college or university of your choice. While we’ve briefly covered this information earlier in the guide, here we will talk more thoroughly so you know just what to do to begin an education in one of the best countries.
Although applying at a university in France is almost the same as applying for a college in any other country, there are a few differences that are important for you to recognize. It is important that, whether you are a European local or an international student, you complete the application process in its entirety, as well as submit all of the required and requested documentation at the time of submission. When you do this it will show you are ready to attend college as well as speed up the process.
Anyone who wants to attend college in France must complete the application process. The application is reviewed by the college once it is received to determine whether or not the applicant is a good fit for the school. Often, a college will look at backgrounds, so it is important this be free of any questionable incidents.
If you are a student already living in the European Union who wishes to attend a college or a university, take a look at the following information for studying in France.
Firstly, an application should be completed. You can obtain an application at the website of the college that you wish to attend or you may pick up an application at the school that you wish to attend in person. It is your choice how to obtain your application.
On the application you will be asked a variety of questions. These questions help the university get to know you a little bit better, as well as your desires within the college. While all applications are different and based upon the college that you have chosen to attend, most are very similar in nature.
All applications will ask your name and address, as well as personal details such as your social security number. You will be required to complete information that asks for prior educational history, including secondary institutions. You will also be asked about your income and other similar questions.
It is essential that the application be filled out completely before it is submitted for consideration. You may need to provide a copy of your photo identification or driver’s license with the application. Also note the other documentations that are required for entrance into the college and assure these items are also submitted at the same time of your application.
Your transcripts are also needed. You must provide proof that you’ve earned a high school diploma (or relevant equivalent) through the transcript. You should also provide any transcripts from colleges that you have previously attended. You cannot submit a college application without having this information. If you do not currently hold copies of the information you can easily obtain them by contacting the facilities that you attended. Sometimes they can fax the material to the college, though it is best that you have a copy that can be submitted with your application whenever possible.
Some colleges will require that you complete an essay of various word length. This is especially true of colleges offering a specialised degree. Be prepared to write this essay and keep in mind that it is one of the most critical components of the entire application process. You need to research the topic at hand and show that you are knowledgeable in the topic. It is quite simple to conduct research and learn about most things, and it is advisable that you take a lot of time to prepare your essay.
If English is not your first language you will also need to provide proof that you are proficient in the language. There are several tests that you can take to provide this need and that you are proficient in English.
There are many different financial aid programs available for students who are local to France. These programs provide a great assistance in easing the costs of attending school. If you are planning to take advantage of financial aid you should indicate this on your college application.
Also keep in mind that each individual college may have their own set of criteria for entering their college or program and you need to follow all of these additional criteria in order to be considered for admission into the school. Without all of the correct documentation, your application may be thrown aside and overlooked, eliminating the chances that you will be able to attend that college.
Many colleges charge a fee to submit an application. The fee must be submitted at the same time of applying. This is true of both those who are coming to France from international countries as well as those who live in the European Union on a full time basis.
NON EU APPLICANTS
If you are interested in attending college in France but do not currently reside in the European Union, below are the procedures that should be followed in order to attend a college in the country.
First, an application to the school that you wish to attend should be completed. Since you are not in the country it is pretty difficult to attain an application from the school; however, you can find the appropriate application on the website of the college that you wish to attend. You will need to download and print this application and mail it back in with the documentation required to be considered for admission into the college.
Transcripts must be provided from all institutions that you have attended in the past. This includes both high school transcripts as well as those from any colleges that you may have attended in the past.
International students wishing to attend a university in France must also provide a copy of their passport as well as a photograph of passport size to the school in which they are applying for admission into. If the college that you are attending is for a duration of longer than three months you will also need to apply proof that you have a Visa in addition to the passport.
Some colleges require that essays be written. If this is a part of the application process, ensure that you write the essay to the best of your ability as it is a critical part of your acceptance or denial into the college. You are required to complete the essay on a various topic, although you should always do research. State facts in your essay and prove that you can write well thought out information. This will do well in your favour when you want to get into a college.
You will also be required to submit proof of English proficiency. This can be obtained through a TOEFL test. This test can be completed online, on the computer or through a printed exam sent via postal mail. You should complete this test well in advance of applying for college. The results of this exam should be submitted along with your application. Do keep in mind that there is a cost to take this exam.
A copy of your birth certificate is needed when you apply to a French university, as well as a certified translation showing the birthplace of both of your parents. This is something that all international students are required to have regardless of their country of origin.
As with those who want to apply to college that already live in Europe, some colleges may require that applicants complete additional steps in order to be considered for admission. It is vital that you follow all of the requested procedures from the college that you want to attend to ensure that you are submitting all of the information they require for admission.
It is also a requirement of French law to provide proof that you have enough money to cover all of the expenses you will incur while attending college. They want to make sure that you attend college and can live comfortably. It is just not worth it to come to the country and be unable to stay due to a lack of finances. With this requirement in place you can find yourself more prepared as well as there for the long haul, and since you are trying to earn a degree this is just what you want.
When you are applying ensure that you have all of these items readily available and on hand to submit. This will make the entire application process so much easier for you. All of the documents should be given to the appropriate personnel when you complete the application. If you do not have all of the documents that you need it can delay the process of getting into college.
